Timeline of Spark Power

The story of Spark Power begins with perhaps the most important element there is in the world: The sun.

2009

Ontario Focuses on Clean Energy

  • The government of Ontario passes the Green Energy Act (GEA) to promote energy conservation and renewable energy production.
Spark Power (Originally Known as Spark Solar) is Formed
  • Jason Sparaga and Andrew Clark, along with Eric Waxman, create Spark Power. The name comes from a combination of Jason and Andrew’s last names (Sparaga + Clark)
  • Spark Solar soon emerges as a leader in developing community-based solar solutions.

2010

Spark Solar Develops the AGRIS Solar Co-Op

  • By securing 1000 microFIT contracts, the AGRIS Solar Co-Op provides individual Ontario farmers the opportunity to own and generate returns from solar projects located on their properties.
  • Spark Solar enters into a 20+ year agreement to manage the AGRIS Solar Co-Op.

2011

Sunny Shores Development Begins

  • Spark Solar commences development of Sunny Shores, a 14 MW feed-in tariff project in Picton, ON. Over 46,500 photovoltaic solar panels are linked across 58 hectares.

2012

Spark Solar Forms the Green Energy Co-Op (GECO)

  • Comprised of 18 solar projects with a 6,2 MW capacity, GECO allows individuals and small businesses to own and generate returns from green energy projects in their communities.
  • Spark Solar enters into a 20+ year agreement to manage GECO.
Spark Makes Its First Acquisition
  • Spark Solar acquires 50% of Northwind Solutions; a company specializing in renewable asset maintenance, operations, and monitoring.

2013

Continued Growth

  • Spark acquires the remaining 50% of Northwind Solutions

2014

Spark Power Corp. is Formed

  • Through a corporate reorganization of Spark Solar, Spark Power Corp. is formed.
Sunny Shores is Sold
  • Oakville Hydro purchases the Sunny Shores project from Spark Power.
Entering the Broader Power Services Industry
  • Spark Power acquires Rondar, a medium and high voltage management contractor based in Hamilton, ON. This boosts company headcount to approximately 100.

2015

Spark Gets Bigger

  • Spark Power acquires Pelikan, a medium and high voltage solutions provider originally located in Burlington, ON.
Spark Power Advisory Board is Formed
  • The Spark Power Advisory Board is formed to guide the company and its executives on corporate strategy, operations, and growth.

2016

Spark Power Makes Additional Acquisitions

  • Spark Power acquires the assets of Ascent Services Inc., the parent company of electrical equipment provider Lizco and medium-high voltage substation and infrastructure experts Tiltran and Tal Trees. Total company headcount surpasses 200.
Award Recognition
  • Spark Power receives the Canadian Business Excellence Award.

2017

EY Entrepreneur of the Year Finalists

  • Jason Sparaga and Andrew Clark are named as Ontario finalists for the 2017 EY Entrepreneur of the Year award in the Power & Utilities & Environment category.
Additional Acquisitions
  • Spark Power acquires New Electric, an industrial low voltage electrical contractor specializing in repairs, maintenance, control panels, and automation.
  • With numerous branches throughout Southern Ontario, total company headcount is approximately 400.
New Electric Expands
  • Spark Power opens a New Electric branch in Belleville, ON.

2018

New Electric Expands Again

  • Spark Power opens a New Electric branch in London, ON.
Expanding the Commitment to Sustainable Power
  • Spark Power acquires Bullfrog Power, a leading provider of green energy to homes and businesses in Canada.
Entering Western Canada
  • Spark Power acquires Edmonton-based Orbis Engineering Field Service; specialists in power systems engineering and technical field services. Total headcount surpasses 700 people.
US Expansion
  • Spark Power enters the US market after acquiring New Electric California with branches in Fresno and Fremont.
Spark Power Goes Public
  • Spark Power joins the Toronto Stock Exchange as TSX:SPG; SPG.WT.

2019

Spark Power Enters Manitoba

  • Spark Power opens a New Electric branch in Winnipeg, MB.
The Future of Power
  • Spark Power founds and hosts the inaugural edition of The Future of Power conference at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto, ON.
Additional Ontario Expansion
  • Spark Power opens a New Electric branch in Brantford, ON.
Opening the Hub
  • Tiltran and Lizco move from Tillsonburg, ON to London, ON as anchor tenants in Spark Power’s new 50,000 sq. ft. Southwestern Ontario hub.
Further US Expansion
  • Spark Power opens branches in St. Cloud, MN and San Antonio, TX.
Additional Western Expansion
  • Spark Power expands its Western Canada footprint by acquiring 3-Phase Electrical Ltd., a low voltage contracting firm based in Winnipeg, MB.
Advancing USA Growth
  • Spark Power further expands its coverage in the Southwestern United States by acquiring One Wind Inc., a renewables services provider based out of Dartmouth, NS, with offices in San Benito, TX, and Austin, TX.
